Training with rewards
Dogs learn fastest when good behaviour earns something they want. The kit is simple: something to mark the moment they get it right, treats close to hand, and a long line so you can practise recall safely.
- Clickers: a click marks the exact moment your dog does the right thing, followed by a treat.
- Long training leads: 5 to 30 metres, for practising recall in open spaces.
- Treat pouches: clip to your belt so treats are always to hand.
- Snuffle mats: hide food in the fabric for your dog to sniff out, a calming brain game.
Getting started with a clicker
Click and give a treat, a dozen times, so your dog learns that the click means a reward is coming. Then click the moment they do something you like, such as sitting, and reward. Keep sessions short and end on a success. For help, a trainer near you is on Pooky Dog.
