Travelling safely with your dog
The Highway Code asks drivers to keep dogs suitably restrained in the car, so they can't distract you or be hurt if you stop quickly. A dog seat belt, a car seat for a small dog, or a crate in the boot all do the job.
- Seat belts: clip into the car's seat belt buckle and onto your dog's harness (not the collar).
- Car seats: a raised booster seat for small dogs, with a short safety tether.
- Seat covers: waterproof covers keep mud and hair off the back seat.
- Carriers: shoulder and backpack carriers for small dogs on trains, buses and days out.
- Dog pram: for small, older or recovering dogs.
On a long journey
Stop every couple of hours for a drink and a stretch, take water and a bowl, and never leave your dog in a parked car on a warm day.
