Everything for the daily walk
A good walk starts with the right kit: a collar with your contact details, a lead you're comfortable holding, a harness if your dog pulls or has a delicate neck, something to make them seen in the dark, and bags for picking up.
What you need
- A collar: the law in the UK says your dog must wear a collar with an ID tag carrying your name and address in public.
- A lead: a short lead for pavements, a long training line for recall, or a retractable lead for open spaces.
- A harness: kinder for puppies, small dogs, flat-faced breeds and dogs that pull.
- An LED collar: so your dog can be seen on dark mornings and evenings.
- Poo bags: always carry plenty.
Choosing a lead
A standard lead of about 1.2 metres keeps your dog close on pavements and by roads. A long training line, from 5 up to 30 metres, lets your dog explore while you practise recall in a safe space. A retractable lead suits open spaces, but lock it short near roads and other dogs. Choose a lead with a padded handle if your dog pulls.
Walking safely in the dark
In winter many walks happen in the dark. Reflective trim on a collar, harness or lead shines back in car headlights, and an LED collar shows your dog from every side. Our dog coats also have reflective strips.
